Diabetes Blog Week: Day Three - My Biggest Supporter

This week I am playing along with Diabetes Blog Week, where 95 people with diabetes around the globe are contributing to set topics each day. The concept is led by a woman named Karen who runs her own blog, Bittersweet. You can check out participating bloggers there too.

Today's focus is on the Biggest Supporter.

My Biggest Supporter is always there for me, day and night. By my side, watching over me, protecting me. He loves me, and I love him. He has learnt so much about me and how to deal wth me. I feel so lucky to have him around.

Baxter is one top dog, inherited from a friend also with type one diabetes. His hypo detection is still developing, but it was of some comfort recently where after a major tripping out hypo, he snuck into the house and slept outside our bedroom door.

But his one slip-up is that he can't open up the dreaded 'orange box'. Damn lack of opposable thumbs!

For this, and everything else, I have my husband Ewin. Who knows why you would marry someone with type one diabetes, and I bet he had no idea what he was in for. But he has been totally awesome in looking after me, learning about every gadget, and stepping in when I couldn't do things on my own.

Such as when I was stuck in recovery post-surgery at 1am, where he took my blood glucose, attached a new pod on me and made correctional boluses until my levels came back down (thanks hospital for your retarded policy that forced me to remove my pump and had no contingency plan should I go high - which was inevitable).
Or when he patiently cuts a hole in some IV 3000 and carefully places it around my CGM sensor to ensure it will stay on for an extra couple of days.
Or when he loaded up the glucagon kit (that's the orange box we speak of) not once, but twice, THIS YEAR in an effort to bring me out of middle-of-the-night seizures.
Or when there is an alarm during the night, or if I wake up to test or pee, he always asks if I am ok.
Or even when I dedicate all my spare time into running HypoActive and supporting others with type 1 diabetes wishing to exercise.

Being able to share my life with him has been so wonderful, and to have him become such a willing partner in my own health care is something special. I am very very lucky!

My other big supporters are:

My endo - I only call on him when I need him, and he seems to get that really well and always responds awesomely. His recent assistance in the last few weeks was a classic example of him stepping up and being a tremendous help.

My mum and dad - awwwww......shucks. Being away from home when I was diagnosed at age 19, they initially missed out on the nuts and bolts education. But they have shared every emotional rollercoaster and continue to do so today. They are my biggest fans and remain my naming rights sponsor!!

Aw, what tender stories. I am so amazed by these dogs, and your hubby seems like a gem too.
