Doing it for the Kids

Each year I organise a team in the Murray to Moyne cycle relay - this year it is on March 27 and 28. All riders and support crew on my team must have a special type of membership to be part of my team: they must have type one diabetes. We will ride in relay from Echuca to Port Fairy, 520km in under 24 hours. Riding all through the day and night with little sleep and recovery is tough for a normal person, let alone a whole team of type ones - most of whom are doing this for the first time ever. Each year is a challenge and brings with it significant risks. See our 2009 report for eg.

The team has two main goals:
1) to show members that they can overcome the risks of exercise with type one and achieve great things, and
2) to raise money supporting kids with type one diabetes to attend camps which are run by Diabetes Camps Victoria.

Knowing that someone else is going through the same difficulties and frustrations can be very comforting, and camps provide this opportunity for kids. They also gain a better knowledge of their condition and the best ways to manage it in a variety of situations. These are tools (and friendships) for life.

I am collecting donations - anything above $2 is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt and thank you from Diabetes Australia - Victoria.

You can donate online here:

Any amount will help. Seriously!

Thanks for supporting me (again) - this year will be particularly tough for me personally as it will be by far my biggest ride since my back-breaking and shoulder-wrecking crash in May 2009.
