Taking a quick rest in our Brisbane hotel before putting together Mum and my bikes for the Brisbane to Gold Coast bike ride on October 10. In the next few minutes we would receive a call saying the ride had been postponed due to weather. Three days in rainy Brisbane was a hellava way to spend a long weekend! Its been a little while, yeah?
Well, in all honesty it has been a little tough to contemplate updating this blog. As much as I do love doing it, I have been dissuaded by some of the following factors:
- decreasing amount of energy to allocate to stuff each day
- increasing amount of workload with HypoActive, despite aiming for the opposite. One of the biggest impacts has been the recruitment of new volunteers to help run stuff. So easy in theory, so hard to implement. New policies need to be worded, reviewed, provided feedback on, and finalised, new job descriptions, new time for coaching and feedback and general guidance. On top of everyday queries and running of events. Don't get me wrong: I do love working on this, but some days it all just adds up and I just can't see over the pile of stuff. Or worse, when I do attend to things it only clears up enough room for more stuff to appear. I guess it is like running a small business, just without the income. So yeah, I guess it is like running a small business!
- stalkers and all round weird people. While it is lovely that people read this blog, it is not so lovely when they go to all this effort to weird me out. Always happy to have comments and feedback, but as I have stated in the past I need to know who you are before I will publish them. This does not mean you impersonate my parents in order to have your comments published. Sorry, that is just way weird. Try using your own identity.
Anyway, back to what has been happening. Here is another list of wondering things that have been happening to me personally:
- I got fat
- I got fatter again
- I got a massive bulge around my middle
- which keeps increasing in size
- I get tired lots, but this does change. Week 27 was pretty energetic compared to other weeks.
- I also continue to throw up (thanks to everyone who reassured me that it would all finish by week 12. It is now week 28 and yesterday I was so sick I lost all my breakfast and had to lie down at work for 15mins as was just feeling so rotten). Luckily, feeling like this does not happen everyday. Perhaps once a week at the moment. Anti-nausea drugs are wonderful, and hideously expensive, aides in this department.
- I have low iron
- I have low Vitamin D
- I have diabetic-pregnancy related teeth issues (apparantly)
- I have insulin resistance. Insulin needs have now tripled for most meals, quadrupled for anything in the morning.
- I am constantly constipated.
- I have had huge amounts of issues with back pain, although these were at their worst during weeks 17-22. The lower back gave me constant pain and forced me off the bike. Chiro, my normal fix for such an issue, seemed to make it worse. Any relief I was able to give my lower back put pressure on my upper back (the parts that I broke in 2009). Any relief I could give to my upper back (basically lying on my back) was great for the upper, terrible for the lower, and not recommended in the pregnancy books. Stuff 'em. But, right now, the back (both ends) have been much better. I think it was a transitioning period.
- My A1c is increasing, but at the moment it is still okay.- My weight gain is above average, which is not cool.
- Despite this, I still have to ask for a seat on public transport. Sometimes I am offered a seat which I gladly accept. But when things were at their worst - like with the back pain, no one offered boo. Only now that I am looking very pregnant do people offer - but only if they look up and only if I look at them with piercing eyes.
With less than 12 weeks to go, 11 if you are an optimistic type 1 diabetic, the end is now looming up on the horizon. Which means we need to start getting organised!

We are also seeing a huge amount of activity from the squatter inside. I get a kick from all the kicks and movements. It is pretty cool right now.
Which is what we will focus on from now.
More to come, I promise.
ciao
